Ilocos Travel Diary: Kapurpurawan Rock Formations, A Jewel in Ilocos

06:22

Standing majestically at the coast of Burgos, Ilocos Norte, fronting the Bangui Bay is the stunning Kapurpurawan Rock Formations. So far, it is the most fascinating natural wonder in this part of the country that I've ever seen and it left me breathless.

Kapurpurawan came from the Ilocano root word "puraw" which means pure or white just like those spectacular white rocks that were naturally formed and created by the forces of the ocean at this rocky coast.

These creamy white limestone formations has become a pride of Ilocos Norte. I was mesmerized by its captivating beauty that i forgot about the effing hot and sunny weather that day.

The white rock formation is approximately 3 kilometers from the main highway and one has to go on a short trek to see it up close. From the drop off point where we parked, we went down a staircase and a path leaded us the way to the rock formations.

Another alternative is to charter a horse to and from the site for a more convenient experience. We came here pretty late that the sun is scorching hot and really a pain in the head. But needless to say we still took the rough terrains, shrubs and small pools of water just to see it up close and personal.

I enjoyed the short trek going to the most popular site of Kapurpurawan and the views around never failed to impress me, while my kids and my husband took the easier path riding the horse! A roundtrip horse ride would cost P150/horse but i bargained the coachman and he gave me 200 for the 2 horses because i said, only the kids will ride and so he agreed, though my husband ride the horse too! I think that's unfair for the horse? Lol!

The pathway going to the rock formations

The rock formations has a chalk-like texture and it was really creamy white in color. The whole place is totally charming with all the wonderful bundles of nature in one spot. I was so captivated by the windmills too at this part of Burgos, that added a different vibe in the whole panorama.

I was like somewhere in another place with the harmony of the windmills, the sunny hot yet windy weather, the ravaging waves from the nearby shoreline, the blue skies, the horses and the white rocks that seems to be an epic of a sleeping dragon according to some.

Reminders for the tourists
All i can see are the wonderful and amazing masterpiece that God has created in this part of the region and i praise Him for such. It has a magical feel that only the combined forces of the wind and the waves can speak about its history. A gifted place indeed!

There are also man-made structures and sculptures around the place like the statue of Lam-ang seated in the middle of a shallow pool.

Truly, nature has the ability to create amazing masterpiece over time and these wonderful works of nature deserves to be protected. Make your Ilocos trip more memorable and worthwhile by visiting this beautifully crafted natural art or you will miss half of your life if you forget it!
